Dental bonding is also used as an alternative to fillings, or to protect a portion of the tooth’s root that has been exposed when gums recede. A tooth bonding procedure can generally be completed in one-appointment. Your cosmetic dentist will apply a liquid composite resin that is shaded to blend with your tooth’s color, to rebuild a pleasing shape of your tooth.

Dental Bonding Fixes

Cosmetic dental bonding can be considered to address the following dental concerns

  • To repair decayed teeth (composite resins are used to fill cavities)
  • To repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • To improve the appearance of discolored teeth
  • To close spaces between teeth
  • To make teeth look longer
  • To change the shape of teeth
  • As a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings
  • To protect a portion of the tooth’s root that has been exposed when gums recede

Dental bonding is one of the most flexible procedures in cosmetic dentistry.

Tooth Bonding Procedure

Dental bonding takes little to no preparation and does not require the use of anesthesia unless it is being used to fill a decayed tooth. Dr. Hodges will match the shade of your existing teeth to select a composite resin color that will closely match the color of your tooth. There are two forms of dental bonding: direct composite bonding and adhesive bonding. Direct Composite Bonding- This type of dental bonding is the process in which we use tooth-colored composites to fill cavities, repair chips or cracks, close gaps between teeth and buildup the worn-down edges of teeth. Direct composite bonding is the technical term for this type of procedure but is commonly known just as “bonding.”

Adhesive Bonding– Adhesive bonding is actually the process of adhering a restoration to a tooth. This is commonly used for crowns, porcelain veneers, bridges and inlays/onlays. Dr. Hodges will apply a composite resin to your tooth and rebuild it to form a pleasing shape. Then he will harden the resin with a curing light, and artistically sculpt and polish the restoration. Cosmetic dental bonding is an affordable alternative to porcelain veneers, but it lasts only 5 to 10 years with proper care. Bonding will not discolor as your natural tooth enamel will, so touch-up teeth whitening may be required to keep your natural teeth the same shade as the bonded area.
