Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a safe, short-acting form of dental sedation. With nitrous oxide, you’ll wear a small mask that administers N₂O. Once inhalation stops, the effects immediately begin to wear off, allowing you to drive yourself home after your dental appointment.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation, also known as conscious sedation, is prescribed and administered in pill form and will require you to have a driver to and from your dental appointment. Conscious sedation is a safe dental sedation option for patients with a fear of the dentist that require something a bit stronger than laughing gas.

Dr. Meghan Hodges and the entire Élan team are committed to your comfort. Before beginning any dental procedure, Dr. Hodges will ensure you are completely numb for a pain-free dental treatment. There are also a number of sedation options for patients who have difficulty getting numb.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Sedation dentistry is extremely safe. Before receiving dental sedation, Dr. Hodges will thoroughly evaluate your medical history and medications to confirm the best type of dental sedation for your treatment.
Am I a good candidate for dental sedation?
Not everyone is a good candidate for sedation dentistry. For instance, sedation may not be recommended for pregnant patients or patients with significant medical conditions. Dr. Meghan Hodges will always perform a thorough evaluation of your medical background before suggesting a type of sedation dentistry.
Do I need someone to drive me home?
Typically yes. For longer lasting sedation options, such as IV sedation or oral sedation, you will be required to have someone drive you to and from your appointment.
