Dentures are replacement teeth designed to fill the gaps in your smile. They can be used to replace a full mouth of missing teeth, known as complete dentures, or to simply fill in specific areas after tooth loss, called partial dentures. Custom dentures are an excellent tooth replacement option for patients who are unable to get dental implants, but still want to restore their smile and confidence.
What are the differences between types of dentures?
There are several types of dentures. As mentioned, full dentures and partial dentures are traditional removable dentures that gently rest on your alveolar ridge, the part of your jaw bone where teeth used to be. Over time, this part of your jaw bone can lose its shape, resulting in loose dentures. To correct this, two or more anchors can be placed to design a snap-in denture, also referred to as an overdenture.
Alternatives exist to dentures in the form of full mouth dental implants, full implant arches and All-on-4 dental implant treatments.
How long does it take for a full set of dentures?
Because dentures require a perfect fit to maximize patient comfort, a series of appointments take place before receiving your full set of dentures, though these tend to move along quickly. The overall timeline can vary depending on treatment complexity, including extractions, and final adjustments. On average, patients receive their final custom dentures in 4-8 weeks.

What to expect at Élan denture fitting
At your first appointment, Dr. Meghan Hodges will examine remaining teeth, if any, and take impressions for an immediate denture. If extractions are needed, a new impression will be acquired once your mouth fully heals to ensure a precise fit for your final custom dentures.
Before receiving your final custom set of dentures, you’ll try-in a wax mockup of your new teeth. At this appointment, you can make any changes that you wish—whiter teeth, different tooth shape, longer teeth, etc.
Once you’re happy with your new smile design, your final dentures will be fabricated in a safe, biocompatible resin and delivered at your next appointment.

Are dentures covered by insurance?
Most dental insurance will help cover a portion of your new dentures, leaving you with a smaller copay, but at Élan, we strive to make cosmetic dentistry affordable for the whole family. With third party finance options and flexible, interest-free payment plans, you can create a financial plan that fits into your budget.
How long do dentures last before needing to be adjusted?
It is not uncommon for dentures to need adjusting. Once you start wearing your dentures regularly, especially chewing with them, sore spots from dentures rubbing on your gum tissue can occur. Your dentist can easily make necessary adjustments or add a soft liner to improve function and comfort. If you experience loose dentures that move easily when talking or eating, consider discussing the option for implant retained dentures with your dentist.
How do I keep my dentures clean?
Dentures must be cleaned every day. Just like natural teeth, they can accumulate tartar buildup and stains. Don’t forget to also clean your gums, tongue, and palate when removing your dentures nightly.
Do people with dentures get regular dental checkups/cleanings?
Even without natural teeth, it is important to schedule routine dental visits to maintain and monitor your oral health. At a minimum, people with dentures should be seen once a year for an annual cancer screen and denture evaluation, ensuring dentures maintain optimal fit, function, and aesthetic.
